How to Turn Off or Disable User Account Control (UAC) in Windows?

UAC is a Microsoft security tool that helps prevent intrusion of malicious software. It is not full-fledged anti-malware or antivirus, but it does notify of changes that are about to be made to the computer.

For troubleshooting application problems, temporarily disabling UAC may help pinpoint the problem or relieve the issue. Be sure to restore this security setting as soon as the issue is resolved.

Windows Vista

1. Click Start and then open Control Panel.

2. In the Control Panel, click User Accounts and Family Safety.

3. Click User Accounts.

4. Click Turn User Account Control on or off.

5. Clear the tick or check mark on the box beside the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer option and click OK.

6. When prompted, restart the computer. Note that the changes will affect all users on the computer.

7. To enable the UAC, simply tick or select the checkbox again.

Windows 7

1. Click the Start menu and type UAC.

2. Select "Change User Account Control settings" from the list of results.

3. Use the slider to adjust the UAC level. There are four UAC levels. The highest will notify you every time a program attempts to make changes to your computer or you change your Windows settings. The second-highest will only notify you when apps attempt to make changes. The third is the same as the second except that your desktop won't dim. The bottom setting won't notify you for anything.

• For most users, it is highly recommended that you leave UAC at the top or second-highest setting, as UAC can help prevent malware infections.

• You can keep your settings high but turn off UAC for specific programs that you trust and use often. See the next section for instructions.

4. Click OK after making your changes. You may be prompted for the administrator password.

Windows 10

1. Type UAC in the search field on your taskbar. (If the search field isn't visible, right-click the Start button and choose Search.)

2. Click Change User Account Control settings in the search results.

3. Then do one of the following: - To turn UAC off, drag the slider down to Never notify and click OK. - To turn UAC on, drag the slider up to the desired level of security and click OK.

4. You may be prompted to confirm your selection or enter an administrator password.

5. Reboot your computer for the change to take effect.
